One of Michigan’s Most Popular BBQ Joints Is Closing
You never like to report about the closing of a local restaurant, especially one that has been through so many trials and tribulations over the years. Travelers Café and Pub opened in Portage over five years ago and had one of the most unique menus in the area.
The interior aesthetic was a celebration of the airport nearby, featured foods from all around the world, and really was a celebration of culture. A few years ago they decided to pivot after having a very successful round of barbecue menu items and enlisted the help of a pitmaster to shift into a full-blown craft barbecue restaurant.

Unfortunately, it looks as though their time has come to an end, and the struggles during construction during the pandemic proved to be too much for the owner Brandon as he recently announced that at the end of the month on October 31 they would be officially closing their doors for good.
In a video, he said a very sentimental goodbye and urged people to support the great employees he has working for him, saying:
Thank you to everyone in the Kalamazoo, Portage, Mattawan and surrounding areas for 5 1/2 years of coming in and enjoying our food, enjoying our recipes, enjoying our drinks, and making it wonderful for us. But I also have to say that this is a sad video today because I am announcing that as of the end of this month October 31, we will be closing our doors. I would love to show heartfelt gratitude to the staff who have been with me for the last 5 1/2 years, you’ve made this place amazing and you’ve made this place great.
He also expressed that in the future, he hopes to maybe open another restaurant, but for now, travelers will be closing on October 31, 2024
