Of course that means close up, lock the doors, end business.
Denny's, which began in 1953 as a donut shop called Danny's Donuts in Lakewood California, expanded to Danny's Coffee Shops, opened new locations, decided to stay open 24-hours, began serving food, and changed their name to Denny's all in the span of eight years. They grew to over 1,900 locations across the country.
However, by the end of 2025, Denny's will be 150 locations lighter. Yes, that is their plan to close 150 locations of which 12 are in Michigan.
The Grand Rapids area has three Denny's, Grand Rapids, Kentwood and Wyoming, so the worry is are they, or any one of ours, on the chopping block?
Our sister station, CARS108 says Executive Vice President and Chief Global Development officer for the corporation says that locations that are either too old to be remodeled and restaurants that have become unprofitable will be on the hit list.
Competition, aging locations, and the customers changing tastes have contributed to a downward slide of Denny's.
And then, there was the pandemic hit of 2020 and Denny's, as well as most everyone else, showed a huge drop in business.
The website Timeout.com/usa wrote:
"Patrons were shocked to learn about the closures, with many people already mourning the popular dish Moons Over My Hammy. Other commenters on social media said they were not surprised, citing factors like low wages and poor service as reasons for Denny's inevitable demise."
But what about the Grand Rapids restaurants? Denny's hasn't said which locations will be cut but we'll know soon.
They are clawing back out of their big hole, but only time will tell if survival is in their future.
