New Father John Misty Music Video Features Shots of Downtown Grand Rapids
Indie Darling Father John Misty, loved his time in Grand Rapids so much, he filmed his music video here.
Father John Misty, the stage name of Josh Tillman, is a singer-songwriter known for blending folk rock with thoughtful, often witty lyrics. He was once the drummer for the band Fleet Foxes before starting his own solo career. His music mixes deep themes about love, society, and life with a style that’s both poetic and a bit sarcastic. Albums like Fear Fun and Pure Comedy have made him popular for their storytelling and rich sound.

This week, he debuted his video for the first single off his upcoming album, Mahashmashana, which will be released on November 22nd. If you live in West Michigan, you may recognize some of the spots in the background of the video, including this abandoned parking lot downtown.
If you're still not sold that this was in Grand Rapids, here he is dancing in front of a sign for 131 downtown, near Van Andel Arena. (I do believe this near the downtown GVSU campus, on Fulton.
And he takes a nice leap in that parking lot beside Van Andel on Monroe that I've parked at dozens of times over the years:
He was in town on September 11th to open for country artist Kacey Muskgraves, so he likely had some downtown and decided to go crazy while waiting downtown to play his show. Either way, it's fun to spot all of the easter eggs of places you may see anytime you see a concert at Van Andel Arena.
