A recent example occurred in West Michigan when Rose Casperson from Norton Shores noticed a small deer with a plastic pumpkin stuck on its nose.

One of her neighbors had set out some plastic pumpkins for Halloween decorations, and somehow, one became stuck on the deer's head.

Thankfully, the deer managed to get the pumpkin off it's head and Casperson found a pumpkin that had a similar dent, as seen in the picture and video she captured.

Advice from Michigan DNR to Protect Wildlife This Halloween

The incident caught on video serves as a reminder to consider wildlife safety when setting up Halloween decorations.

Rachel Lincoln, a wildlife outreach coordinator with the DNR Wildlife Division, offered the following precautions:

Avoid harmful substances: Do not use paint, bleach, or other chemicals on pumpkins, as these can be harmful to wildlife that may eat them.

Be cautious with decorations: Fake cobwebs and string lights can entangle bats and birds if placed over bushes or between trees.

Position decorations wisely: Keep decorations away from natural flight paths or wildlife habitats to minimize risks.

Check decorations post-holiday: After Halloween, inspect decorations for any small animals that may have sought shelter, such as birds, squirrels, or insects, to avoid accidentally trapping or harming them.
