After seeing this major pile up I wanted to know if it was the worst traffic accident in the state.

Turns out it wasn't, here is what I was able to find out.

Michigan's Worst Traffic Accident Happened In 2015

In January 2015 nearly 200 cars were involved in Michigan's largest vehicle pileup.

The pile-up happened on I-94 near Galesburg. 76 Semis and 117 cars collided resulting in one fatality.

One of the trucks involved was full of fireworks and started firing them off resulting in multiple injuries

In 2016 five people were tragically killed and a dozen more were injured in Livingston County.

The combination of Black ice and whiteout conditions was blamed for this tragic crash.

Historic Michigan Car Crash Facts

While looking into the worst traffic pile-up in our state's history, I also found some other interesting facts from the past.

  • In 1969 Michigan experienced its deadliest year for car accidents. 2,500 people died in car accidents across the state.
  • Michigan's first automobile-related death happened In 1902. A wealthy Detroiter traveling in a horse-drawn carriage was hit by an early motorcar.

It's always important to be alert and focused when driving but it also might be a good idea to avoid these dangerous intersections in Michigan.

These Are Michigan's Most Dangerous Intersections

If you're driving in Michigan you might want to avoid these intersections. Michigan Auto Law a Michigan-based law firm created the list of Michigan's most dangerous intersections using Police information from 2021 to determine which intersections saw the most crashes.

These 10 Rejected Michigan License Plates Are Hilarious

The state of Michigan released a list of banned vanity plate requests.
There are over 21,000 personalized plates that have been banned by the Michigan Department of State for being dirty, graphic, or hateful. These are some of them.
