I can't be the only person who has a large soft spot for pets in need. When I heard about the Detroit Community Cat Rescue shutting down due to allegations of neglect and abuse that they are currently facing, I was heartbroken for the kitties involved.

Since they were Detroit's first and only cat's only rescue, it feels extra sad to see those animals now back in the wind after all they've been through. Detroit Community Cat Rescue, was founded in 2021 as the first cat-only non-profit shelter in Detroit, a community resource that was greatly needed.

The organization originally started as a rescue and moved into a shelter space on Ward Ave about a year and a half ago. Since then, it's been a temporary home for countless cats waiting to be adopted.

Why is the shelter closing?

According to reports, The shelter space is closing after alleged claims of mismanagement and negligence against former board members as well as numerous resignations.

A protest being led by the shelter's former shelter manager happened on March 5th at the current shelter space. That's when a majority of the board, including some former board members associated with Matt Wojtowicz, Pizza Cat, and Tay Henderson, placed their resignations.

How can I help these 16 cats in need for a new home?

The one remaining board member is seeking help finding the remaining 16 kitties a new home. Currently, 10 of the cats are still being held at the shelter and the remaining six are in foster care until they are rehomed as well. They are hoping to have all the cats out of the current shelter space and into foster care or hopefully into a permanent home by the end of this month.

They have taken the shelter's website down after a slew of harassing calls after their recent spotlight, so you are only able to learn about and adopt these kitties on the websites Petstablished and Petfinder, and they'll set up meet and greets with interested parties.
