Grand Rapids Gerald R. Ford International airport was in the running for best small airport in the U.S. in a USA Today 10Best Readers Poll.
While giant airports like JFK, LAX, and ATL often dominate the travel scene due to the sheer number of passengers who pass through them each day, the United States is home to many smaller, friendly airports that take some of the headaches out of travel.
These 20 airports — nominated as the best in the U.S. by an expert panel — serve smaller numbers of passengers each year, yet excel with their commercial flight offerings, easy access, and amenities.

Named in honor of the 38th President of the United States, Gerald R. Ford International Airport serves as the gateway to the sprawling eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Amenities around here range from a dedicated military welcome center to plane-themed playrooms for younger guests, while craft beer fans can swing by MI Tap Room for a much-needed local IPA before boarding begins.
GRR recently celebrated its 60th birthday. In case you missed it, the airport recently added a wine bar/ bookstore.
The airport has also expanded with fourteen new gates, new restaurants and a beer garden.
