Today the Michigan Senate approved legislation supporters say will protect gun owners' privacy by making firearms records confidential.

Under the legislation these records could not be requested under the Freedom of Information Act. They would only be available to law enforcement under certain conditions.

Supporters say this legislation is in response to what a newspaper in New York did last year. It published the names and personal addresses of some gun permit holders. They say this legislation would prevent that from happening in Michigan.

The Michigan House takes it up next.
