According to the Lansing State Journal, Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer took the oath of office as Michigan's 49th governor Tuesday.

Governor Whitmer challenging Michiganders to overcome their partisan differences to build a better state, as she said the state's residents have done previously.

More than 2,000 people braved freezing temperatures to witness the swearing in of our new Michigan Governor.

Whitmer embraced her daughters Sherry and Sydney and husband, Marc, after using a family bible to take oath of office from Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Clement.

Whitmer, an attorney and former Senate minority leader from East Lansing, campaigned on a platform of fixing "the damn roads," improving education, and cleaning up the environment, defeating republican Attorney General Bill Schuette by nine percentage points.
