Gov. Whitmer Asks MI High Schools, Youth Leagues To Pause Sports

In her latest press conference on Friday, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer asked, but did not demand, that high school and youth sports pause for two weeks in light of the recent surge of coronavirus cases in Michigan.

Michigan has the most current COVID-19 cases in America, with many outbreaks throughout the state. Last year, the Michigan high school winter sports season went unfinished and the spring sports season never happened because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) is concluding the winter sports championships this weekend with the girls and boys basketball championships at the Breslin Center in East Lansing (you can hear all games on The Game 730 AM WVFN on Friday and Saturday all day long). And the spring sports season has already begun throughout most of the state.

The MHSAA fall season, you may remember, was not started until mid-September of 2020 due to the pandemic. And it was paused by Governor Whitmer in November due to another surge in COVID-19 cases in Michigan. But the fall season was finished back in January with the football finals being played at Brighton's Legacy Center (8-Player) & Ford Field (11-Player).

In addition to asking for a two week pause of high school sports, Governor Whitmer also requested that high schools go virtual and restaurants pause indoor dining for two weeks.
