General Motors has issued a recall for millions of vehicles for an issue with Takata airbags.

Millions of trucks and SUV's in the United States are under a recall order for concerns over the airbags. Takata airbags were used in the vehicles and are now the cause of the issue and need for a recall. General Motors tried to avoid the recall with a petition, but that was denied by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The petition that General Motors submitted contended that the inflator canisters for the airbags have been safe on the road and in testing. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has determined that those inflator canisters still run the risk of exploding.

The problem with the Takata airbags is that the inflator canisters can deteriorate when exposed to heat and humidity. That deterioration can cause the ammonium nitrate canister to explode with too much force and blow up sending shrapnel everywhere. There have been 27 deaths worldwide related to the airbags and 18 of those happened in the United States.

Unfortunately, it is going to cost General Motors around $1.2 billion to replace the faulty airbags in all those vehicles. GM will also have to submit a plan to the NHTSA for notifying vehicle owners. Even though GM argues that there is nothing wrong with the airbags, they have accepted the ruling and have ordered 1.6 million replacement parts already.

The recall affects many vehicles between 2007 and 2014 including:

  • Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickup trucks
  • Chevrolet Suburbans
  • Chevrolet Tahoes
  • Chevrolet Avalanche
  • Cadillac Escalades
  • GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, and 3500
  • and GMC Yukons
