BREAKING NEWS......A potentially toxic situation closed down a portion of an interstate in Ingham County this morning.  It happened in the eastbound lanes of I-96 just east of the State Capitol.

Lt. Hall of the Ingham County Sherff's Department, appearing today on the Steve Gruber Show with Jo Anne Paul on 1240 WJIM-AM,  says the driver of a tanker, carrying what could be a dangerous chemical, lost control around 5 o'clock spilling its entire load.

The incident closed both eastbound and westbound lanes between Cedar Street in Lansing and Okemos Road in Meridian Township for a time today.  At least one lane of westbound traffic is now moving again but the eastbound lanes of the highway are expected to be closed for several hours.

Hazmat crews remain on scene trying to access the environmental damage that may have been caused by the accident.

A second vehicle then slammed into the tanker.  Drivers of both vehicles were injured but no word yet on how seriously.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area  until further notice.
