Watch out boaters!

In Michigan, drunk boating limits have been lowered from .10 to .08 blood-alcohol level.

The .08 blood-alcohol limit puts driving a boat while “drunk” on par with driving a car while “drunk.”

Not that this law change will deter most people from drinking and driving a boat — what should deter people is the fact that drinking is the top cause of boating accidents and drownings.

The fact that drinking is a major cause of boating accidents and deaths is what should drive people to not drink and boat: Remember you may take an innocent person's life, and that is what matters to me.

You want to be drunk and drive a boat or car and kill yourself, that is one thing. But when you drink and drive a boat or car and kill another person, I have no sympathy for you.

So, be smart and safe this memorial weekend — and throughout your life — and do not drink and drive anything.

As the rock group Queen said, “Keep Yourself Alive.”

Remember Memorial Day is not about barbeques and getting drunk.

Memorial Day honors the men and women who died while serving in our U.S. military. Did you know it was originally known as Decoration Day? Decoration Day had its origins in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.

So, please remember that freedom is not free, and someone other than you paid the ultimate price for your freedom.

Sincerely,
Renk
