As Cloudiest April Ever Ends, May Starts With Even More Clouds

If it feels like there's been a lack of sun lately, you're right. And in May it should get better, after a slow start.

April Showers Were Up This Year, As Was the Cloudiness

The old adage goes, 'April showers bring May flowers,' but this year it's more like 'April clouds bring May...uh...er...clouds.'

What the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids says was one of the cloudiest April in history will give way to clouds and eventually some heavy rains in the opening days, before the sun coming out just in time for Mother's Day.

Cloud cover dominated the April skies with no back to back sunny days until the end of the month and only 30 percent of the available sunshine for the month, tying the all time record set in 1980.

Temperatures in the Grand Rapids metro were down 4 degrees over the average and rainfall was up 1.2 inches above the norm.

The month went out like a wet sponge, with the final day of April bringing heavy showers that lasted until early Sunday.

So Will May Bring Better Weather?

Not immediately. In fact heavy rains are on the way for Tuesday, with a 100% probability of rain. It eases up Wednesday, with some spots of sunshine, before more rain on Thursday and Friday. The only good news is Mother's Day should be good for getting Mom out for a picnic and some sunshine on Sunday, with highs close to 70 degrees.

Spring is coming. It'll just be a little slow and late. May will continue to be wet and cool until mid-month when the weather should break and warm up quickly as we head toward memorial Day and the unofficial start of summer.
