Amazon Has Big Plans to Add Four New Sites in Michigan
Amazon is doing big things in Michigan by adding four new facilities, including its first in mid-Michigan. Technically, you could say five new sites if you include the new fulfillment center that just opened up on the former site of the Pontiac Silverdome.
According to The Detroit News, the four new sites including a more than 1 million-square-foot fulfillment center in Delta Charter Township just west of Lansing, a sorting center and a delivery station in Gaines Township in the Grand Rapids area, and a delivery station in Canton Township. These sites are expected to open in the next year or two.
Alicia Boler Davis, senior vice president of global customer fulfillment for Amazon:
We’re excited to expand our investment throughout the state of Michigan with the addition of these new facilities. This expansion not only allows us to better serve our customers across the state but also enables us to boost the local economy and drive more opportunities for job creation.
Creating job opportunities is something they have definitely brought to the table as they've created more than 21,000 jobs so far in Michigan. Right now alone, at the new 823,000-square-foot robotics fulfillment center in Pontiac, they're looking to hire 1,000 people. Of course, actually getting people to apply and show up for work is an entirely different story.
Fred McPherson, general manager of Amazon’s Pontiac fulfillment center:
We have the latest and greatest technology in our fulfillment center to make the customer fulfillment process as efficient as possible. Everything from laptops to books to beauty products, other electronic products, snacks. It’s a wide variety of products we have at the fulfillment center.
With the number of packages that are on my front porch every day, I'm starting to think that my fiancé is the reason for their ongoing success in the state...it's insane.
