Why didn't you just go to the island?

When I lived in Alaska, that was where I got my first taste of 'Ono Grindz.

That means delicious foods in Hawaiian Pidgin (loosely translated thank you).

So I got my first taste of Hawaiian food in Alaska.

You're still stuck on why I had to go to Alaska to get Hawaiian foods, aren't you?

When I lived in the AK for about ten years, I discovered a big chunk of the population were Pacific Islanders with a big contingent from, you guessed it, Hawaii.

So I learned a lot from my Hawaiian, Samoan, and Tongan friends.

And I ate A LOT of 'Ono Grindz.

I know I've seen that dish before.

Meet some of the Hawaiian treats you can only get at Aloha Cookin' in Downtown East Lansing.

The menu is stacked with some island favorites. Like those above, ramen, and even musubi.

I'm gonna go ahead and suggest you go for the Kalua Pig, Kalbi, and BBQ chicken or pork. I know it's gonna sound weird too, but that macaroni salad just tastes better when it's served here. Trust.

The interior is very nice as well.

Just to prepare you before you get there so you don't get sticker shock, the prices might be a little high for student budgets. Then again, you might not even blink at $13 - $18 plates and entrees. There are plenty of items in the $10 range and under.
