Just days after getting my second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, we're learning that a large number of fully vaccinated Michigan residents have contracted the deadly disease. This video report from a local doctor outlines how it's still possible to contract COVID-19 even after being fully vaccinated against the disease.
As many as 246 Michigan residents who are fully vaccinated have reported testing positive for COVID-19. Three of those people have died, according to a report from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
All of the people who died were in the 65 and older age group.
Lynn Sutfin, a representative from the MDHHS, tells the Detroit News that the individuals tested positive during the first quarter of this year (Jan 1 - March 31) and received a positive coronavirus test at least two weeks after their final COVID-19 vaccination.
"Some of these individuals may ultimately be excluded from this list due to continuing to test positive from a recent infection prior to being fully vaccinated," Sutfin said. "These cases are undergoing further review to determine if they meet other CDC criteria for determination of potential breakthrough, including the absence of a positive antigen or PCR test less than 45 days prior to the post-vaccination positive test."
Sutfin went on to say that while most people develop full immunity from the disease about 14 days after their second dose of the coronavirus vaccine, it takes a small percentage of people longer to mount a full antibody response.
The Detroit News reports that Michigan surpassed 700,000 new cases of coronavirus on Monday (4/5) and currently leads the nation in new cases per capita.
