In general, about 1 in 8 Americans smoke, but here in Michigan it's about 1 in 5.  And it's even higher if you are from a couple of the largest cities in the state.

Cigarettes kill almost 500,000 people every year and it seems that many of those cigarette related deaths are happening right here in Michigan, especially in Detroit and Flint.

The Center for Disease Control posts information about cigarette smoking on their website and YourLawyer.com gathered that information and determined the percentage of smokers in major cities across the country.

13.7% of Americans as a whole smoke, but that percentage is much higher in Detroit and Flint, who were determined to be 1st and 3rd on the list of cities with the most smokers.  About 29.2% of Detroit's adults are smokers and Flint wasn't very far behind with 29.1% of it's adult residents being smokers.

Those 2 cities weren't the only Michigan cities to make the Top 50 U.S. Cities With the Most Smokers either.  Warren was ranked 20th with a percentage of 25.2% and Dearborn also made the list ranked at 23rd with 25.0%.  You can see the complete list of the top 50 below.

All of the Michigan cities that made the list were on the east half of the state, but that doesn't mean that West Michigan has a much lower percentage of adults who smoke.  According to an article from 2018 by WZZM 13, about 20% of Michiganders smoke and most West Michigan counties have slightly higher percentages.  Kent, Ottawa, and Kalamazoo counties had the lowest percentages of smokers in West Michigan though, with 16% for Kent and 15% for both Ottawa and Kalamazoo.
