General Motors will spend nearly $450 million to add on to two facilities that build and provide important components for electric vehicles. About $385 million will be set aside for next generation plug in Hybrid Volt cars. These will be built at the Detroit Hamtramck Assembly Plant. (see photo below)

In addition the Brownstown Battery Pack Assembly Plant in Wayne County will get about $65 million. This facility makes lithium-ion battery packs for electric vehicles that are designed for extended range.

At the two plants combined this is expected to generate nearly 1,500 new jobs.

About 60,000 Volts have been sold since the first one rolled off the assembly line in late 2010.
