As the owners of the Detroit Red Wings pursue plans to build a new arena in the downtown Detroit area there has been concern over what would become of the team's current home--the Joe Louis Arena. The site where the Wings now play is tied in with a big development project. If part of it is not approved it could jeopardize the entire deal.

That's why supporters say a big hurdle was cleared today when the Detroit City Council approved a proposal that will allow for a new arena to be built under the terms that are agreeable to the Red Wing's front office. It also clears the way for the demolition of the Joe Louis Arena. If all goes as planned that area near the riverfront will be re-developed.
