"Staples is in the process of investigating a potential issue involving credit card data and has contacted law enforcement," company spokesman Mark Cautela said in a statement reported by MSN.com.

Cautela added that customers will not be responsible for any fraudulent activity on their credit cards that is reported in a timely fashion.

The incident came to light, according to the article, after a reporter indicated a problem involving several Staples stores in the northeastern portion of the United States.

There is no information on what type of information--or the extent of the breach--but the office supply retailer is promising to work closely with law enforcement to identify those affected.
