There seems to be a lot of news lately about phone scams in the area and here's another one to add to the list. The Shiawassee County Sheriff's Office alerted residents over the weekend that there was a phone scam that was being reported in the Owosso and Durand areas where several grandparents reported that they had received a phone call from a young man calling from a blocked number. The caller claimed to be their grandson and reportedly said that he was in jail and needed some bond money immediately in order to be released. Like a lot of the other phone scams, the caller then requests that you purchase gift cards and scratch off the code on the back and send him a picture of the card's numbers.
The Shiawassee County Sheriff's Office is reminding residents that this is a scam and if you or anyone you know receives a call similar to this DO NOT give out any information or buy any gift cards. You can also call the jail at 989-743-2240 if you have any questions or concerns.
