State legislators have approved provisions that are designed to allow oil and gas companies to drill on their sites using carbon dioxide and starting today those new laws are now in place. By using this carbon dioxide method they'll be able to reach sources they've been unable to reach before.

Here's how it works: the oil is actually pushed through wells with the use of carbon dioxide. These legislation also clears the way for these companies to actually build their own carbon dioxide pipelines.

Supporters say this will help extract oil in a safe and effective way. They say this kind of an effort will help make Michigan and the U.S. less dependent on foreign oil sources.
