Drivers in Michigan have seen the cost of filling the tank soar over the past year. Part of the rising costs is being triggered by higher oil prices and the rest of the price hikes are attached to state gas tax increases that took effect last month.

In all, the average price per gallon is up 67 cents over this time last year. If you have a 20 gallon tank and fill up about once a week that is $700 more out of your pocket than you paid in 2016. That is real money that can have a real impact on families and their household budgets.

The good news is that gas prices are still far below the peak when the average price per gallon topped $4 dollars just a few years ago. I guess that is at least something to smile about, at least a little.
