From an article I wrote in 2014. It's worth reading and revisiting considering the immigration crisis.

The Steve Gruber Show has confirmed that Wolverine Human Services is pursuing a federal contract to bring illegal alien children (IAC’s) to its Vassar, Michigan campus. The company is also doing its bidding in secrecy refusing to include local residents in the conversation that could result in hundreds of IAC’s getting dumped in Vassar.

Vassar City Manager Brad Barrett cancelled a scheduled Wednesday morning interview statewide on the Steve Gruber Show. “We will be able to tell you much more after we get a contract”, Barrett told SGS Executive Producer Amanda Wall. Wall also spoke with Wolverine Human Services Vice President Derrick McCree who also said “until we get a contract” we really cannot say much more. McCree also declined numerous offers to address the controversial issue on the show.

Barrett, who says he knows little about the plan seems to know a lot more than he is saying. Just last week according to tuscolatoday.com he said “I’ve heard those rumors,” and then added “I’m going to reserve my right to comment until after the informational meeting. I just know they have space available there.” Well that secret, closed to the public informational meeting happened Tuesday.

This controversy demands many questions be answered. For example; how many kids are we talking about being dumped in Tuscola County, on who’s authority are these kids being sent here, are the kids being checked for disease, who is footing the bill, how long will they be here and how much does Wolverine Human Services stand to profit? Seems Wolverine might be putting money ahead of public safety and public health.

And those questions are just the beginning for many. Concerned Michigan resident and SGS listener Ann McNitt wrote this today on The Steve Gruber Show Facebook page; I volunteer as an advocate for handicapped foster and adopted children. The Feds are going to be sending illegal immigrant children from Central America to Vassar, a small town with a population of 2,650--and a darned convenient way for the feds to "hide" them. The foster care system in Michigan is already stretched beyond its reasonable limits; social workers are maxed out with their caseloads, and there is a dire shortage of foster parents. How are they going to find Spanish-speaking foster parents and social workers for these children? Who is going to pay for their foster care, medical care, and in some cases, psychiatric care? Are the feds going to deal with the strep, lice, and scabies that have been reported? Have they even had basic TB tests, to make sure that none of the children are carrying the untreatable form of that disease? There are reports that some of the young girls were "rented" to come here, and have been raped en route. These kids were separated from their parents, their language, and their culture to come here. The whole picture stinks. It isn't their fault, but the President is using these children as pawns to shame Americans who believe that the legal path to America is the only acceptable way to go. Send these children home. They need to be with their families.

Ann is right both for her concern and her anger. The truth is it’s not the kids' fault and they should not be punished but Barack Obama must be held accountable for his reckless disregard for our border, our laws and our nation. Right now Governor Rick Snyder must step up and put together a plan for all of Michigan’s legal residents to deal with the flood that is getting ready to soak up millions of dollars and overrun already fragile social services.

It is time to reflect on Teddy Roosevelt and his take on immigration as it seems spot on today. TR said during his Presidency; if he aspires to be "American and assimilates himself to us he shall be treated on an exact equality with every one else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed or birth-place or origin.

But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American and nothing but an American. If he tries to keep segregated with men of his own origin and separated from the rest of America, then he isn't doing his part as an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans, of American nationality, and not as dwellers in a polyglot boarding-house; and we have room for but one soul loyalty, and that is loyalty to the American people."

We need some Teddy Roosevelt kind of leadership today!
