Officials are discussing a proposal that would replace the deck of the Mackinac Bridge. If all goes as expected the project will start in 2018. The overall cost would be around $200 million. As far back as the late 1800's there were discussions about building a bridge linking the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. About that time the area started becoming very popular with tourists. However because of the shear magnitude of such a massive endeavour delays persisted. Then in 1934 the state legislature agreed to set up the "Mackinac Straits Bridge Authority."  In 1953 actual design work started. Construction was finished in 1957. On November 1 of that year it officially opened. The bridge is five miles long and over 550 feet high and connects St. Ignace and Mackinac City.
