For the fourth time on record Lake Erie is nearly completely ice covered. The lake has only had 100% freeze over in 1977, 1978 and 1996. Even last years long bitter cold winter didn’t cover the lake completely. This year however with temperatures now plunging to record lows it seems other milestones might be in sight too.

The Great Lakes are freezing and they are freezing fast with temperatures routinely as much as 20 degrees below zero.

Lake Huron and Lake Superior were more than 80% frozen as well. Lake Michigan and Lake Ontario were also icy but less solid. Those two lakes are at about 60% ice coverage.

Will the lakes reach more than 90% coverage like last year? That’s hard to say but with bitter temperatures predicted into at least mid- March it is certainly possible.
