The state's jobless rate is down, but only by the slightest amount.  Still, the numbers are being seen as a further indication that the state is heading in the right direction.

Statewide unadjusted numbers for December were down 0.1 percent from the November rate.  That brings the percentage of unemployed in Michigan to 7.7% statewide. While not a significant dip, numbers recorded last month were more than a full percentage point below the rate of the year prior.

The jobless numbers varied in communities across the state with the Ann Arbor area the lowest at 5.2% to a high of more than 12% recorded in the northeastern Lower Peninsula.  The Detroit area rate is just slightly higher than the statewide average.
