It has been a very long time since the United States has taken a one-two punch like those delivered by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. The good news is that we as a nation learned lessons from Katrina in 2005 and Sandy in 2012. We plan better and we react better. It is in times of crisis that we realize who we are as a nation and we pull together to help each other out.

Some cannot resist the temptation however to turn it all into a political football but for the most part the rest of us focus on the things that really matter like helping our neighbors get back on their feet. We volunteer, we give our time and our money and we open our doors to friends, family and strangers alike. Americans are willing to do whatever it takes to help people out in times of crisis and despair.

It may have taken two ugly storms to put us on the same side recently but so it is. Today we are working together to continue the massive efforts to get Harvey victims back home and independent. We will do the same in the coming days for those crushed by Irma.

You see that's who we are.
