General Motors now has a Global Vehicle Safety Department and a 40 year G.M. veteran has been named its Vice President. He's Jeff Boyer and job one will be to identify and fix problems related to vehicle safety concerns. Boyer is 58 and has been with the auto maker since 1974.

This announcement comes as G.M. is in the process of recalling nearly 1.6 million vehicles from 2003-2007. Officials say ignition switches could shut down without notice. Those behind the wheel could end up losing control. Investigators say there have been 31 crashes and 13 have been killed.

In addition to the Justice Department several Congressional committees are investigating.
