Two people attempting to bring a suspicious package through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel caused it to close for several hours Tuesday evening.

Police found what appeared to be a cardboard cylinder with a fuse attached while doing a routine vehicle search shortly before 5 p.m.  The men who were driving the vehicle were taken into custody and a bomb squad was sent in to inspect the device.

It turned out to be a smoke bomb.  According to a law enforcement official the smoke bomb does not pose a threat to boarder security.

The men are still being detained because other items were found in the vehicle.

The tunnel reopened shortly before 9 p.m.
