Detroit Tigers Trade Yoenis Cespedes to New York Mets for 2 Pitchers
The Detroit Tigers have traded outfielder to the New York Mets.
Multiple media outlets reported the trade Friday afternoon about 10 minutes before the MLB Trade Deadline. The Tigers reportedly got right-handed starting pitcher Michael Fulmer and right-handed starter Luis Cessa, both minor leaguers, in return.
Cespedes is batting .293 with 18 home runs and 61 RBI. He defected from Cuba in 2012, signing with the Oakland A's. However, Cespedes was reported to have been close to signing with Detroit, but the Tigers nixed the deal when Victor Martinez got injured and instead signed Prince Fielder.
Cespedes had reportedly told friends and family he wanted to remain with the Tigers. Detroit could still re-sign him in the off-season when free agency begins.
