Great news for the parents of Detroit school kids.  A report from the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools has found that Detroit has the nation's second highest percentage of students attending charter schools.

That is going to open opportunities for these children.

The report stated that 55 percent of Detroit’s students were enrolled in charters in 2013-14, up from 51 percent the previous school year. The alliance reported 58,612 students in Detroit charters, compared with 48,193 in traditional public schools.

That is a big change from just nine years ago when just 18 percent of Detroit students attended charters.

See how other Michigan cities fared:

  • Two other Michigan cities ranked in the top 10 for charter school market share: Flint, at No. 3 with 44 percent of students in charter schools, up from 29 percent in 2012-13, and Grand Rapids at No. 7 nationally, with 30 percent of students enrolled in charters, up from 26 percent the year before.
  • Port Huron (16 percent)
  • Lansing (15 percent)
  • Warren (15 percent)
  • Kentwood (14 percent)
  • Traverse City (12 percent)
  • Wayne-Westland (12 percent)
  • Plymouth-Canton (10 percent)
