Conditions Right for Deadly Travel
Another nasty swipe from Mother Nature. Not only snow but dangerous winds. A combination that has already proven deadly.
Wind chills in the next day or two likely to "feel" more like 20 below zero. That, coupled with another dumping of the white stuff, could make for some near white-out conditions. Also, road salt is relatively ineffective in temps like these, so most roadways will be slippery in spots.
Numerous accidents reported in and around the area today and more are likely to come. Police are warning again to slow down and leave extra time for travel.
A deadly crash just south of the Michigan border in Indiana has claimed three lives--including at least two victims from Grand Rapids. Dozens more were injured--at least one critically-- when some 15 semi-trailers and 15 other vehicles piled up on eastbound I-94 in white-out conditions. At least one person was trapped for hours before help could arrive.
Those killed have been identified as Thomas Wolma, 67, and his 65-year-old wife Marilyn of Grand Rapids. They were returning home from Wisconsin where they were helping out a relative. The Chicago victim has been identified as Jerry Dalrymple, 65. He and his dog were both killed in the crash.
