Efforts are underway in Congress to put millions of dollars back into the "Great Lakes Restoration Initiative." Recent budget cuts have resulted in less money being spent on a wide range of programs designed to improve the waterways. Some of these include protecting wildlife habitat, saving wetland areas, cleaning up toxins and combating invasive species. The "Great Lakes Restoration Initiative" is described as the largest investment in the Great Lakes in years. An action plan was developed with the help of eleven federal agencies.
