The Michigan State Capitol is about to become a Michigan State Historical Site. It will be official tomorrow. As a result a special commission will be appointed to make sure the building and grounds surrounding it are always in the best shape possible. This includes overseeing all future restoration projects as well.

Construction of the State Capitol was completed in 1878.  At that time the building could house every state of Michigan government department and agency. But in subsequent years with the growth of state government additional buildings in the downtown Lansing area were needed.

The State Capitol was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
