Big Changes Coming for Michigan Energy Law

The Chairman of the House Energy Policy Committee, Aric Nesbitt, has proposed legislation to change the current energy laws in Michigan.  According to the Associated Press the new legislation would end competition for electricity.  The current renewable power requirement would go unchanged, therefore it would not rise under the proposed legislation.

Nesbitt said Thursday that if the two prominent utility companies were guaranteed 100 percent of sales customers would save money.  As of 2008 competitors are allowed up to 10 percent of the market for energy sales to businesses and schools.

Nesbitt would like to make sure all Michiganders have reliable electricity.

Those who oppose this legislation say that competition is needed to keep costs low. Businesses that buy from other markets say that their costs would increase if they were forced to go with one of the two dominate companies.
